HeKz – Vivus

The first time I enjoyed a performance by progressive metallers HeKz was in August 2014. Having been chosen by Classic Rock Magazine as the most promising young band in the UK, they blew the roof off The Bedford in London. They were young guys, led by singer/bassist Matt Young. Now, over a decade later, HeKz is still going strong—and to be honest, better than ever.
Matt Young is still the main man, but the band has changed dramatically. None of the original members remain alongside him, but the lineup changes made a few years ago were definitely for the better. The band now features Tolis Zavaliaris on guitar, Lucia La Rezza on electric violin, and James Wise on drums.
Their first live album, Vivus, proves just how good this band has become. For this recording, the band was also joined by excellent keyboardist Jonny Gibson-Smith. The show was captured at the legendary Cart & Horses in London—the birthplace of Iron Maiden.
With their fantastic double album Terra Nova featured heavily in the setlist, the band also reaches deep into the HeKz catalogue for live favorites from Tabula Rasa, Caerus, and Invicta.
Matt Young is not only a great singer—a fact he demonstrates powerfully on this album—but his bass playing is phenomenal as well. He also mixed and mastered Vivus. It’s his first time totally mixing and mastering an album, and he did a good job. His voice is slightly upfront in the mix, but that allows you to actually hear the lyrics—something that’s often lost on live albums. I also love it when drums are clearly audible, especially when the drummer is as talented as James Wise, and Matt gives the drums all the space they need.
Tolis and Lucia are exceptional in their performances, with Lucia’s short solo piece giving her an extra moment to showcase her incredible talent. One of my favorite HeKz songs is "Disconnect the World," and I’m thrilled with the version on Vivus. "Line in the Sand" has always given me goosebumps, and it did so once again here.
Making great studio albums is one thing, but bringing that music to life on stage is another. With Vivus, HeKz proves they are ready for the biggest stages.
