Want to hear what fractal geometry, chaos, and non-linear physics sound like when mathematics turns into music? Climb the Devil's Staircase...
The Devil's Staircase is an international group of musicians playing rock inspired by math and science. However, they don't play traditional "math rock." Bandleader, composer, bassist, and scientist Luis Nasser explains that their inspiration stems from scientific fascinations and how to make them sound cinematic and fun. And he is absolutely right—Mother Mycelium is fascinating. Entirely instrumental, it features repeating themes, superhuman melodies, expansive soundscapes, and intriguing sound effects. I can honestly say I enjoyed it to the fullest.
The interplay between Tim McCaskey’s acoustic guitar and Aaron Geller’s electric guitar often le Aaron Geller - Electric Guitar, Ramsés Luna - Saxophone, Midi Wind, Electronics, Tim McCaskey - Acoustic Guitar, Luis Nasser - Bass Guitar, Mattias Olsson - Drums, Percussion, Mellotron and Edgar Arrellín Rosas - Sound Design, make this album special.
Luis Nasser wrote all the pieces—though it feels more accurate to call them compositions—and the band brings them to life brilliantly. "Gravitation Pt. 4," for instance, reminded me a bit of Phideaux’s Snowtorch Part Two.
If you like melodic, instrumental, and experimental music—as I certainly do—this album comes highly recommended. I love it!
