You can absolutely call Michel St-Père’s solo album 'Like Father Like Son' a labor of love.
The guitarist of Mystery and Huis started playing the guitar nearly 50 years ago when his father taught him his first chords. He never stopped playing. Influenced by the music his father shared with him, Michel developed a style all his own—one that shines clearly through the music of Huis and, especially, Mystery. He is a phenomenal guitarist, a composer, and a musician with impeccable taste.
Yet for his first—and completely instrumental—solo album, he didn’t write a single tune. Instead, all 15 tracks are songs from his past: the influential, taste-defining pieces that marked his musical upbringing. The tracklist ranges from Henry Mancini’s "Peter Gunn" and The Shadows' "Apache" to Ennio Morricone’s theme from Once Upon a Time in the West(with the iconic harmonica melody rendered on electric guitar), Steve Hackett’s "Shadow of the Hierophant," and Gustav Holst’s "Mars, the Bringer of War."
Michel St-Père gives every track his own characteristic sound, backed by two fantastic musicians: Jimmy Keegan (ex-Spock's Beard) on drums and Jonas Reingold (Steve Hackett, The Flower Kings) on bass and fretless bass. They form a powerhouse trio I would love to see live.
Like Father Like Son is simply great. The musicianship is outstanding, and St-Père arranged each track beautifully in his signature style. I love how he breathes new life into these 15 songs while remaining deeply respectful of the original performances—ultimately making them his own. A fantastic album.
