Alan Reed – Grey Sky Thinking

Alan Reed – Grey Sky Thinking
Self Released
Many know Alan Reed as the frontman of Pallas and Abel Ganz, as well as for his performances with the Daughters of Expediency. In 2025, Reed was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. While this unfortunately means playing guitar and bass live will no longer be possible, he still played acoustic and electric guitars, bass, very occasional keyboards, and handled programming on this record, which was recorded over a very long time. Joining him is a stellar lineup: Mike Stobbie on keyboards, Niall Mathewson on electric guitar, vocals, and occasional keys, and the fantastic Henry Rogers on drums. Backing vocals are beautifully provided by Kim McLean and Laëtitia Chaudemanche (Weend’O).
Reed is also a journalist, and that background shines through in his lyrics. He reflects on a world falling apart and how historical disasters continue to leave unhealed scars. He tackles heavy themes like terrorism—notably on the excellent track "Sons of the Caliphate"—delivering goosebump-inducing moment after goosebump-inducing moment. The song "First Responder" was inspired by four major terrorist attacks and the Grenfell Tower fire, all of which he covered for the BBC. The deep emotional impact of those events is palpable throughout the track.
Reed’s voice remains remarkably beautiful and powerful. It carries hints of Fish (in his prime), John Mitchell, Tim Bowness, and Damian Wilson, yet remains unmistakably his own. On Grey Sky Thinking, he sings his absolute heart out.
I am completely blown away by this album. It is packed with great songs, rich orchestrations, and stunning, memorable melodies—I simply couldn't stop listening. While it is heartbreaking that he will no longer be able to play live or tour, I sincerely hope he continues to write and sing. With such a formidable team of musicians beside him, he certainly has the support to do so.
